Waves in screen prints and videos.
WAVE originated from my thinking about "watching the sea." I created this piece using scanned images of my palms, screen prints of the waves, and videos of the waves. I attempt to discuss how the sea connects everything on earth across time, space, and the wholeness of humans and nature.
The steady frequency of the waves brings me a gentle feeling. In this video, I express emotions by controlling the frequency: A stable frequency represents calmness, a high frequency expresses anger or dissatisfaction, and a low frequency expresses deepness or emptiness.
Biologically speaking, all living things originated in the ocean. It is the hometown of all life. The seawater itself has no color. We know the sea can be colorful because of the refraction of sunlight or the seaweed, which has color. From the perspective of civilization, the sea separates the continental plates and civilization. The land cannot communicate with each other when a sea is in the center. But when civilization develops enough, the sea connects them again. I put these thoughts into the video to provide viewers with a different perspective on the sea. View of the sea from underwater, from above, it is different but similar.
Human palms also appear in WAVE. I think the palm symbolizes a person's identity, and the appearance of multiple palm parts represents a group of people constantly appearing. I use these to present people who thought about similar problems in front of the ocean. People can have a similar experience when looking at the same thing from different personal perspectives. The collective similarity allows people from different cultural backgrounds to empathize. The individual is connected to the collective. This connection across time and region makes me feel that cultural barriers, racial hatred, competition for interests, and environmental damage should all be put aside. Humans and other creatures originated from the sea. At this moment, when looking at the sea, we should be one with the earth.
